Multi-Generational Homebuying Hits a Record High — and Here’s Why It Makes Sense

It turns out “home sweet home” is getting a little more crowded these days — and for good reason. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), 17% of today’s homebuyers are purchasing homes to share with parents, adult children, or extended family — the highest percentage ever recorded.

So what’s driving this new wave of multi-generational living? One simple word: affordability.

Families Are Pooling Resources To Make Homeownership Work

NAR found that 36% of buyers said cost savings was the primary reason they chose a multi-generational home — up from just 15% in 2015. With home prices and mortgage rates where they are, combining forces can make all the difference.

By sharing expenses — from the mortgage to utilities — families can stretch their budgets and sometimes even qualify for a larger property than they could on their own. As real estate expert Rick Sharga explains, “There are a growing number of multi-generational households across the country today, and affordability is one of the reasons for this.”

It’s About More Than Just the Money

Beyond the financial benefits, many families see multi-generational living as a way to care for aging parents, spend more time with loved ones, or create a support system under one roof. It’s a return to a more traditional way of living — where everyone helps everyone, and memories are made together at the dinner table, not through FaceTime.

Chris Berk, VP of Mortgage Insights at Veterans United, summed it up perfectly: “Multigenerational homes are more than a trend. They’re a meaningful solution for families looking to care for one another while making the most of their homebuying power.”

Could It Work for You?

Nearly 3 in 10 buyers say they’re considering this setup for their next move. If you’ve been feeling priced out of the market, teaming up with family might be your path to homeownership — and a chance to create a home that truly fits everyone.

Bottom line: Multi-generational living isn’t just a trend — it’s a smart, practical way to make owning a home possible in today’s market.

If you’re curious what that could look like here in the Sayre, Athens, and Waverly area, let’s talk about options that make sense for your family.
